This relaxation blend was inspired by the practice of yoga and its ability to connect the mind and body. The word itself translates from Sanskrit as ‘union’. Pranayama (breathing techniques) and asana (physical movement) work together to unify the mind, body and spirit while alleviating ails.

This moreish tea is ideal to relax the body, take the edge out of a stressed day and aid in restful sleep. Renowned herbalist Matthew Wood raves of lemon balm’s ‘magic’ in ‘The Earthwise Herbal’ insisting this "spirited" plant live in the cupboards, larders and pantry’s of every household. Praised for its safe and calming effect on the mind and body, it is the leading herb in this relaxation blend. With its ability to syncronise communication between the gut and brain, this herb works wonders as a remedy for somatic ails triggered by a restless mind.

It is harmonised with earthy, calming chamomile flowers for a deeper warmth, linden flowers and minty catnip for a cool, sweet freshness. This tetrad not only soothes anxiety but calms the digestive tract bringing balance to both mind and body.

I’ve added the distinguished hop flower to the mix for extra sedation and its antispasmodic influence, which will soothe a worrisome belly. Skullcap, routinely considered the king of the nervine tonics is both cooling and sedative, calming tension while nourishing and enlivening the central nervous system into balance.

Womb Wisdom

Lady's mantle reigns in this blend for its ability to nourish and tone the uterus. It’s a favourite of mine growing low to the ground with soft, round leaves that collect glistening drops of morning dew. Affectionately named “little Alchemist” for its expert management of our waterways- Alchillea mollis improves female energy by reinforcing, protecting and connecting.

Red raspberry leaf offers similar qualities as a powerful uterine tonic, rich in flavanoids, vitamins and minerals to help tone and nourish the uterus. It is popular during the third trimester of pregnancy but this “herb supreme” is beneficial for women at all stages of the feminine life cycle.

Nettle is a wonderful source of non-heam iron which is essential for the health of our muscles, blood and energy- vital actions to support the reproductive cycle. High in vitamin C (which improves iron absorption) this cooling herb works as a cleansing alterative, liberating the body of unwanted toxins. This is helpful for hormone regulation by detoxifying any hormone excess.

Elder flowers with their high vitamin C content and abundance of antioxidants is another cooling herb with detoxifying properties. These fragrant blossoms help relieve water retention by eliminating toxins and heat from the urinary system.

You’ll be hard pressed to find shepherds purse on the shelves of wholefood stores these days and what a shame as this is one of my most admired herbs for women. The tiny heart-shaped leaves of this humble weed echo its oxytocin building properties. Not only is “mothers heart” full of the ‘love hormone’- it’s also a uterine contractor and super astringent. This helps stimulate blood flow when there is coagulam and staunches excess bleeding.

Yarrow- considered the “master of blood”- has an anti-inflammatory response on the body by regulating blood flow. The sterols found in the aerial parts of this plant help reduce heavy bleeding.

Sweet rose petals conclude this nourishing blend, relieving uterine congestion by cleansing the kidneys, liver and gall bladder of stagnation and heat. They add a sweet floral taste while restoring the nervous system to balance.
